The exhaust gases from a Diesel engine consist chiefly of carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrogen, ant1 excess oxygen.

The constituents of diesel exhaust gas that are harmful to health at certain concentrations are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and oxides of Sulfur if the fuel contains Sulfur. Aldehydes are objectionable because of their odor, and smoke because of its contaminating effect both in the atmosphere and in the engine. Trace constituents identified in the products of combustion of Diesel fuel include mono-olefins, di-olefins, aromatics, and saturated hydrocarbons, along with acetaldehyde, acetic acid, propionic acid, acetone, and inethyl alcohol.

When Diesel- engines are operated underground or in confined spaces, ventilation should be provided to maintain the concentration of any constituent at an allowable value. The composition of Diesel exhaust gas depends chiefly on fuel: air ratio. However, the relation between fuel: air ratio and the constituents present in low concentration-carbon monoxide, aldehydes, and oxides of nitrogen-is affected to some extent bv type of engine, composition of the ambient atmosphere in which the engine operates, barometric pressure, and cetane number of the fuel.
