Developing and Validating Multiple-Choice Test Items

Language Editing Service. Multiple-choice tests are used to assess learning outcomes in variety of disciplines. They are comprised from two main parts: stem and options distractors. Stem, by conveying information and fore heading the problem to be answered plays a vital role in any multiple-choice test. Although there are large bodies of studies to design options in these kinds of tests, constructing stem items has received too little attention. Accordingly, much of current debate in constructing test items revolves around designing and building proper multiple-choice test options. Ascalon, M.

Multiple-choice MC exams are common in undergraduate general chemistry courses in the United States and are known for being difficult to construct. With their extensive use in the general chemistry classroom, it is important to ensure that these exams are valid measures of what chemistry students know and can do. One threat to MC exam validity is the presence of flaws, known as item writing flaws, that can falsely inflate or deflate a student's performance on an exam, independent of their chemistry knowledge. Such flaws can disadvantage or falsely advantage students in their exam performance. Additionally, these flaws can introduce unwanted noise into exam data. With the numerous possible flaws that can be made during MC exam creation, it can be difficult to recognize and avoid these flaws when creating MC general chemistry exams.

Construct-irrelevant variance CIV - the erroneous inflation or deflation of test scores due to certain types of uncontrolled or systematic measurement error - and construct underrepresentation CUR - the under-sampling of the achievement domain - are discussed as threats to the meaningful interpretation of scores from objective tests developed for local medical education use. Test score inflation or deflation, due to the systematic measurement error introduced by CIV, may result from poorly crafted test questions, insecure test questions and other types of test irregularities, testwiseness, guessing, and test item bias. Using indefensible passing standards can interact with test scores to produce CIV. Sources of content under representation are associated with tests that are too short to support legitimate inferences to the domain and which are composed of trivial questions written at low-levels of the cognitive domain. Most sources of CIV and CUR can be controlled or eliminated from the tests used at all levels of medical education, given proper training and support of the faculty who create these important examinations. Cite this guide: Brame, C. Multiple choice test questions, also known as items, can be an effective and efficient way to assess learning outcomes. Multiple choice test items have several potential advantages:. Versatility: Multiple choice test items can be written to assess various levels of learning outcomes, from basic recall to application, analysis, and evaluation. Because students are choosing from a set of potential answers, however, there are obvious limits on what can be tested with multiple choice items. Reliability: Reliability is defined as the degree to which a test consistently measures a learning outcome. The reliability is enhanced when the number of MC items focused on a single learning objective is increased.
