Gametogenesis is the process of formation and differentiation of haploid gametes sperms and ova from the diploid primary germ cells, gametogonia spermatogonia and oogonia present in primary sex organs called gonads testes in male and ovaries in female respectively. It is the formation of haploid, microscopic and functional male gametes, spermatozoa from the diploid reproductive cells, spermatogonia, present in the testes of male organism. In the seasonally breeding animals, the testes undergo testicular cycle in which the testes and their spermatogenic tissue become functional only in the specific breeding season.

This may be divided into spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Spermatogenesis deals with the development of male sex-cells called sperms in the male gonad or testis. Oogenesis is the development of female sex-cells called ova or eggs in the female gonad or ovary. The male gonad known as testis is the site of spermatogenesis. In each vertebrate a pair of testes remains attached to dorsal body wall by a connective tissue called mesorchium. Each testis is formed of thousands of minute elongated and coiled tubules called seminiferous tubules.

Gametogenesis, the production of sperm and eggs, takes place through the process of meiosis. The production of sperm is called spermatogenesis and the production of eggs is called oogenesis. Oogenesis occurs in the outermost layers of the ovaries. As with sperm production, oogenesis starts with a germ cell, called an oogonium plural: oogonia , but this cell undergoes mitosis to increase in number, eventually resulting in up to one to two million cells in the embryo. The cell starting meiosis is called a primary oocyte.

Spermatogenesis

Spermatogenesis is the process by which haploid spermatozoa develop from germ cells in the seminiferous tubules of the testis. This process starts with the mitotic division of the stem cells located close to the basement membrane of the tubules. The mitotic division of these produces two types of cells. Type A cells replenish the stem cells, and type B cells differentiate into primary spermatocytes. The primary spermatocyte divides meiotically Meiosis I into two secondary spermatocytes; each secondary spermatocyte divides into two equal haploid spermatids by Meiosis II. The spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa sperm by the process of spermiogenesis. These develop into mature spermatozoa, also known as sperm cells.

We have examined the relative methylation levels of several dispersed repeated and low-copy-number gene sequences during gametogenesis and early embryogenesis. In contrast, the same sequences were highly methylated in DNA from pachytene spermatocytes, round spermatids, and epididymal sperm. These results indicate that there are genome-wide DNA methylation differences between oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Repeated sequences in DNA from cleavage-stage embryos and inner cell masses ICM were methylated at intermediate levels, consistent with transient maintenance of gametic methylation levels during early embryogenesis.

Gametogenesis occurs when a haploid cell n is formed from a diploid cell 2n through meiosis. We call gametogenesis in the male spermatogenesis and it produces spermatozoa. In the female, we call it oogenesis.
