Physiotherapists treating patients following uncomplicated coronary artery bypass surgery also called coronary artery bypass graft surgery, or CABG surgery continue to use interventions such as deep breathing exercises that are not supported by best available evidence.

A comprehensive listing of the more common cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases encountered in clinical practice is thoroughly presented, including the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and implications for therapy and exercise. Throughout the second edition, information is organized and presented logically in a bulleted format; essential information is conveniently accessed on basic cardiovascular and pulmonary anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology of commonly encountered cardiac and pulmonary disorders, assessment, diagnostic tests and treatment interventions, pharmacology and pediatrics. The journal publishes 6 issues per year, mainly about respiratory system diseases in adults and clinical research. This work can range from peer-reviewed original articles to review articles, editorials, and opinion articles. The journal is printed in English, and is freely available in its web page as well as in Medline and other databases. The Impact Factor measures the average number of citations received in a particular year by papers published in the journal during the two receding years. In addition to concerns with physical health and activity levels, children with cardiac conditions can be at risk of neurodevelopmental and socioemotional maladjustment. Children with congenital heart defects requiring surgery early in life are at risk of developmental delays and cognitive impairments, and both children with congenital heart defects and those with cardiomyopathies are at risk of socioemotional concerns. As a result, there is an increasing focus on rehabilitation efforts for these patients, in order to improve both their physical well-being and their adjustment outcomes. However, there are no established standards for rehabilitation programs applicable across children with cardiac conditions, in stark contrast to guidelines for adult patients. The purpose of the present review is to summarize recent studies on pediatric cardiac rehabilitation and describe the structure of our own program, in order to aid with the delineation of future guidelines. Twenty programs for pediatric cardiac rehabilitation were identified and reviewed. We also review emerging cognitive rehabilitation for children with cardiac disorders and discuss a newly developed program at our own institution.

Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy: Evidence to Practice

Management of noncommunicable diseases requires the adoption of multidisciplinary interventions that targets the modification of risk factors. Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are amongst the four main killers of noncommunicable diseases. Physiotherapists specializing in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy are in a critical position in the management of health behaviors associated with noncommunicable diseases. However, the current context of health service in Jordan does not provide sufficient support and recognition for the delivery of specialized physiotherapy services. The primary aim of this study was to describe cardiorespiratory physiotherapy service in Jordan. The secondary aims of this study were to: i Identify benchmarks from international contexts and guidelines for the delivery of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy service. This two phase study included a survey and a conceptual review with benchmarking.

Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation: a Review

Cardiovascular rehabilitation can help those who have heart disease, or those at risk, to reduce the risk of future cardiovascular episodes and improve overall health. For physical therapists, interprofessional collaboration is key for success. As you can see, physical therapists play a small, but very important , role in the grand scheme of cardiac rehabilitation. Physical therapists must work collaboratively with other health team members to ensure optimal physical recovery. For example, per the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India, after a myocardial infarction MI , the goal is to mobilize the patient as soon as he or she is clinically stable, often within hours of the episode.

Skilled physical and occupational therapists and nurses who are dysrhythmia qualified work collaboratively with a board-certified physician specializing in cardiac rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation to assure that medical, physical, and emotional needs are addressed during recovery from an acute cardiac or pulmonary illness or surgery. They frequently call upon other committed professionals, such as mental health professionals, speech therapists, exercise physiologists and members of our talented medical staff. The overall goal is for our patients to have a safe discharge plan. There are many conditions that bring patients to Helen Hayes Hospital for inpatient cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, but generally it is following a heart attack, cardiac or lung surgery or after a complicated hospitalization for heart disease or lung diseases such as emphysema or COPD.
