Definition : Graded Index fiber is another type of optical fiber in which the refractive index of the core is non-uniform. This non-uniformity is present because the refractive index is higher at the axis of the core and continuously reduces with the radial movement away from the axis. However, the refractive index of the cladding is constant in the case of graded index fiber. Hence the nature of the refractive index of the core is somewhat parabolic. Unlike graded index optical fiber, the step index fiber has a constant refractive index at the core as well as cladding.

Comparative Study of Step Index and Graded Index Fiber An experimental system for nondestructive measurement of the refractive- index profile of an optical fiber pre form is reported.
In optical fiber, a step index fiber is a fiber characterized by a uniform refractive index within the core and a sharp decrease in refractive index at the core-cladding interface so that the cladding is of a lower refractive index. In a step index fiber, the light rays propagate in zig-zag manner inside the core. The rays travel in the fiber as meridional rays and they cross the fiber axis for every reflection. It is important to note that, Step index fiber is found in two types, that is mono mode fiber and multi mode fiber. Signal distortion is more in case of high-angle rays in multimode step index fiber. In single mode step index fiber, there is no distortion.

The characteristics of propagating modes of an optical fibre consisting of a cylindrical core whose refractive index varies arbitrarily with radius, embedded in a homogeneous cladding of infinite outer radius, are studied numerically. It is shown that, to avoid strongly accumulating errors, the numerical solution of the field equations in the core region must be performed by a combination of solution techniques, namely, by step-by-step integration in cylindrical shells where the solution is of oscillatory type, and by a two-point boundary-value technique in shells where the solution is of exponential type. When the core solution is matched at the core boundary to the cladding solution, there results a characteristic equation whose roots specify the effective refractive indices of the propagating modes. A complete theoretical discussion is presented for modes with, as well as without, axial symmetry.
Fiberguide Industries manufactures over different specialty optical fibers to meet the needs of our customers. We specialize in optical fibers used for photonics applications, power delivery and sensing, and we also offer data communications fiber. Our high performance coatings enable our fibers to operate at extreme temperatures and survive in harsh environments. Our standard optical fiber offering is detailed below and on the accompanying spec sheets.
For an optical fiber , a step-index profile is a refractive index profile characterized by a uniform refractive index within the core and a sharp decrease in refractive index at the core- cladding interface so that the cladding is of a lower refractive index. The step-index profile corresponds to a power-law index profile with the profile parameter approaching infinity. The step-index profile is used in most single-mode fibers and some multimode fibers. A step-index fiber is characterized by the core and cladding refractive indices n 1 and n 2 and the core and cladding radii a and b. The value of n 1 is typically between 1. Step-index optical fiber is generally made by doping high-purity fused silica glass SiO 2 with different concentrations of materials like titanium, germanium, or boron.
Why use graded index fiber? Page 2. • There are mainly two types of multimode fibers: Step Index and Graded Index.
