A complex interplay of electric and magnetic behaviors resides in the parent compound of a nickel oxide material known to host high-temperature superconductivity, a finding that may guide studies into this phenomenon. A generalization of quantum hydrodynamic theory provides a new, accurate approach to calculating the optical response of a plasmonic system beyond classical electromagnetism. Arrays of nanomagnets known as artificial spin ice can host high densities of mobile magnetic monopolelike quasiparticles at room temperature, opening the door to new studies of magnetic charges in synthetic matter. Theoretical work shows that quasi-one-dimensional topological superconductors can emerge in certain 1D quantum structures, offering a path to engineering behaviors essential to quantum computing. A generic statistical property of large data sets that describe equilibrium systems can reveal phase transition properties, thus introducing a new data-based viewpoint on phase transitions. Experiments show that an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator is a good platform for exploring half-quantized surface resistivity, a hallmark of elusive axion dynamics. Observations of fluctuations in a dipolar quantum gas provide insight into the mechanism underlying the superfluid-to-supersolid phase transition.

At the same time, plasmons can couple strongly to electrons, which renders them particularly interesting for superconducting properties in layered materials. In this thesis we use an extended version of density functional theory for superconductors SC-DFT to account for both the full dynamic Coulomb interaction and phonon contributions in two dimensions. We find that interplaying phonons strongly enhance the superconducting critical temperature, especially at small interaction strengths. The interplay between phonons and plasmons shows both suppression and enhancement depending on the doping level. These results are promising in the view of exciton mediated superconductivity in sandwich structures and in various layered materials like transition metal dichalcogenides and twisted bilayer graphene. In all of these materials plasmonic contributions have so far been neglected.
