Difference Between Plant Cell and Animal Cell

The plant cell and the animal cell can be differentiated by the presence of organelles in them. Even the size of the animal cell is smaller than the plant cell. The concept of cell originated from the historical work done by the Schleiden and Schwann in Cells exist in an amazing variety of sizes and shapes. Likewise the living beings, the individual cells that form the body can grow, reproduce, process information, as well respond to stimuli.

Although they are both eukaryotic cells, there are unique structural differences between animal and plant cells. Each eukaryotic cell has a plasma membrane, cytoplasm, a nucleus, ribosomes, mitochondria, peroxisomes, and in some, vacuoles; however, there are some striking differences between animal and plant cells. While both animal and plant cells have microtubule organizing centers MTOCs , animal cells also have centrioles associated with the MTOC: a complex called the centrosome. Animal cells each have a centrosome and lysosomes, whereas plant cells do not. Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and other specialized plastids, and a large central vacuole, whereas animal cells do not.

On the one hand, Kingdom Plantae is composed of multi-cellular although some are unicellular autotrophic organisms. At present, it is estimated that the total number of plants is , while of course, a lot remains undiscovered. On the other hand, the members of the Kingdom Animalia make up more than three-fourths of all species found on our planet. They typically range from the simplest like the sponges and corals up to the most developed one like humans. Regarding physical appearance, plants undeniably are distinctly different from animals. But what about inside them?

Comparing Plant and Animal Cells

Plant cells are eukaryotic cells present in green plants , photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Their distinctive features include primary cell walls containing cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectin, the presence of plastids with the capability to perform photosynthesis and store starch, a large vacuole that regulates turgor pressure, the absence of flagella or centrioles , except in the gametes, and a unique method of cell division involving the formation of a cell plate or phragmoplast that separates the new daughter cells. Plant cells differentiate from undifferentiated meristematic cells analogous to the stem cells of animals to form the major classes of cells and tissues of roots , stems , leaves , flowers , and reproductive structures, each of which may be composed of several cell types. Parenchyma cells are living cells that have functions ranging from storage and support to photosynthesis mesophyll cells and phloem loading transfer cells. Apart from the xylem and phloem in their vascular bundles, leaves are composed mainly of parenchyma cells. Some parenchyma cells, as in the epidermis, are specialized for light penetration and focusing or regulation of gas exchange , but others are among the least specialized cells in plant tissue, and may remain totipotent , capable of dividing to produce new populations of undifferentiated cells, throughout their lives. Parenchyma cells that contain many chloroplasts and are concerned primarily with photosynthesis are called chlorenchyma cells.

This chapter introduces learners to the cell. They may have encountered the cell before, but here we will look at the structure of cells, including the organelles common to most eukaryotic cells. We will also look at the differences between plant and animal cells. Later we look at the hierarchical organisation of cells into tissues then into organs then into systems and then into an organism. Some information has been included on specialised cells. This was thought to be important to introduce the idea of a biological structure being adapted to its function to ensure functional efficiency.

Cells are the smallest functional units of life in all organisms. Ask students, do all cells look the same? Which structures might be the same in both a plant and an animal cell? Which might be different? Have students read and discuss the Plant Cell and Animal Cell infographics.

4.3E: Comparing Plant and Animal Cells

What are the differences between animal and plant cells?

Plant and animal cells have several differences and similarities. For example, animal cells do not have a cell wall or chloroplasts but plant cells do. Animal cells are mostly round and irregular in shape while plant cells have fixed, rectangular shapes.

A plant cell contains a large, singular vacuole that is used for storage of water and nutrients. It also helps maintain the shape of the cell. In contrast, animal cells have many, smaller vacuoles, which also are used for storage of water and nutrients. surrounds the cell membrane.
