Inequality, Welfare And Poverty: Three Interrelated Phenomena

Majumder, Rajarshi : Removing poverty and inequality in India: the role of infrastructure. Developing countries attach enormous importance to physical infrastructure for poverty reduction. We contend that this association is different across types of infrastructure and regions. The present paper explores the multidimensional association between infrastructure and poverty in India in a regional framework.

Infrastructural availability improves average living standards and lowers the incidence of poverty but the relation between infrastructural situation and inequality indicates higher inequality in regions with better infrastructure, especially for rural areas.

Various sub-components of infrastructure have different impacts on poverty reduction and policy formulations should focus on such differentiated roles while drawing up programmes. Ali, I. Handbook of Income Inequality Measurement pp Cite as. Sen , in the preface of his book on economic inequality, points out that the idea of inequality is both very simple and very complex. It is simple if it is defined merely as the dispersion of a frequency distribution. But then there exist several measures of dispersion which can result in contradictory conclusions about the relative merits of income distributions. The pure statistical approach to measuring inequality is of little help in deciding if one income distribution is more or less equal than another. Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF.

A large body of literature is devoted to the measurement of income inequality, yet little attention is given to the question, Why measure inequality? However, the reasons for measurement bear importantly on whether and how measurement should be done. Upon examination, normative measures are found to be of questionable value. Descriptive measures, by contrast, may be useful, but the appropriate measure depends on the field of application rather than on general, a priori principles of the sort that are emphasized in the existing measurement literature. Measures of poverty are also considered, and similar conclusions are reached. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution. Rent this article via DeepDyve.
