The different groups of preservice and experienced teachers were selected in order to provide diverse perspectives on learning environments associated with the enactment of field trips as enrichment for the science classroom. The article describes the field trip programs and provides examples of how teachers in different stages of their professional development perceive the content, learning activities and problem solving as characteristics of the learning environment. The learning environment categories identified under the content characteristic were interest, interdisciplinary, innovation, difficulty, and contexualising. Under the activity characteristic were autonomy, involvement, collaboration, interaction, effectiveness and concretisation.

The teachers' perceptions of the experienced learning environment were diverse and the categories described provide a framework of planning improvement in the content domain as well as in the enactment process of the field trip planned according to the principles of the general system theory.

What do you remember from school? What caused you to be who you are today? Chances are, a group project, a special speaker, or a field trip helped you decide. It may have even been something you did on your own, outside of school after learning about a given topic. There was something in your life that sparked your passion or curiosity. It pushed you to take your learning into your own hands and learn more. Every student comes to the classroom with a different world experience.

The study gathered and compared data collected in two points in time — immediately at the end of the experience and two months afterward. T -tests for paired samples were used to examine potential differences in perceptions and principal component analysis was used to identify the key factors determining the success of the experience. The findings indicate that there are various motivations behind participation and that time barely affects perceptions of the experience. Furthermore, three factors emerged as important for meeting expectations, namely, social and professional connections, learning and traditional yet engaging teaching. While the outcomes are useful, they need to be thoughtfully applied because of the small data set. It is important to repeat similar investigations to allow more certainty in the propositions formulated. Furthermore, future studies should evaluate a broader variety of outcomes to determine whether perceptions remain constant.

EFFECTIVENESS OF FIELD TRIPS AND SEMINARS: A STUDENTS PERCEPTION

Field trips are a time-honored tradition in most schools. The students love them--field trips give them a chance to get out of the classroom and experience something new. There are advantages and disadvantages of field trips, however, that must be weighed before you decide to embark on one. One of the biggest advantages to field trips is that they allow students to have a real-world experience. This experience should clearly illustrate and enhance information taught by the curriculum. For example, a textbook lesson on the life cycle of a salmon can be enhanced by a trip to a local salmon hatchery, where the students can clearly see the salmon in its many life stages.

Online technologies have removed the barriers of time, cost and location from the learning activities and experiences available to students. Virtual field trips allow learners to engage with and to learn about authentic artifacts and to explore places important to their discipline of study and consistent with their individual learning needs. During a virtual field trip students can be guided through museums, historical documents, national monuments and agencies or organizations specific to the course content. A virtual field trip can also involve attending an artistic performance and connecting with a leader in the field of study. As a nurse educator, my students and I have visited the National Institute of Nursing Research, the National Library of Medicine, the Grave sites of famous nurses, The National Patient Safety Foundation and many other places to enhance understanding and application of course content. These field trips bring the real-world perspective to concepts discussed in course text-books as well as provide a national and global perspective to the material being studied.
